Marjorie Taylor Greene Warns Against Wartime Power Creep Amid Growing MAGA Rift Over Iran

Former Georgia congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is reportedly sounding the alarm over what she says could become a dangerous expansion of presidential power during wartime, warning that Americans should never accept the cancellation of elections — even in the middle of a global conflict.

Greene, once one of President Donald Trump’s most vocal defenders and a fierce champion of the MAGA movement, said Thursday that she worries the ongoing war involving Iran could be used to justify extraordinary measures by the administration. Her comments highlight the growing divide inside the America First coalition as conservatives increasingly question deeper U.S. involvement overseas.

Speaking during an interview with conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, Greene pointed to remarks Trump made during a 2025 meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During that exchange, Trump referenced Ukraine postponing elections because of its war with Russia.

“So, you say, during the war, you can’t have elections?” Trump said at the meeting. “Three and a half years from now, so you mean if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections? Oh, that’s good.”

Greene acknowledged that Trump appeared to make the comment jokingly, but she said the remark still left her uneasy.

“He said it jokingly,” Greene told Jones. “But at the same time, knowing President Trump, I looked at that and I thought … I don’t know if he’s joking.”

The former congresswoman argued that even entertaining the idea of extending power during wartime risks normalizing something she believes would violate core constitutional principles. Greene warned that Americans should reject any attempt to move toward a third presidential term or delay elections because of military conflict.

“I think it’s incredibly dangerous and no one should ever accept it,” Greene said. “There cannot be a third term, no. That’s against our laws, that’s against the Constitution, there is no third term.”

She added, “And if this country is at war, no, our elections should not be canceled.”

The comments come as tensions continue to rise inside Trump’s political base over the administration’s actions involving Iran. Several high-profile conservative voices who once strongly backed Trump’s return to the White House have begun openly criticizing the military operation, arguing it clashes with the president’s long-promoted “America First” message opposing prolonged foreign entanglements.

Among those critics are Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson, both longtime Trump allies who helped rally conservative support during the 2024 campaign. Their criticism reflects a broader concern among many on the right that overseas conflicts can quickly grow beyond their original scope, dragging the United States deeper into costly and unpredictable wars.

Greene’s split with Trump follows mounting frustrations over conflicts in both the Middle East and Ukraine, along with disagreements over the administration’s handling of files connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The once-close political alliance between Greene and Trump fractured after Greene resigned from Congress in January following a public falling-out with the president.

The debate over executive authority also comes with clear constitutional limits already in place. The 22nd Amendment bars any individual from being elected president more than twice. While Trump has publicly joked about serving a third term, he has also acknowledged that he understands he cannot legally run again.
