Long Serving Democrat Congresswoman Quits Congress

Democratic Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky reportedly announced her retirement on May 5, 2025, after serving Illinois’s 9th Congressional District for 26 years.

At 80 years old, she expressed gratitude to her constituents for allowing her to be their voice in Congress.

In her statement, Schakowsky highlighted her pride in her accomplishments, particularly her role in drafting and passing the Affordable Care Act, which expanded health coverage to millions and prohibited denial of coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

Schakowsky’s decision not to seek reelection comes amid a shifting political landscape, as she would have faced a contested Democratic primary for the first time in her career.

Prominent left-wing activist Kat Abughazaleh, who is significantly younger and has drawn comparisons to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, entered the race in March. Schakowsky welcomed new faces in politics but ultimately decided to step aside.

Throughout her tenure, Schakowsky has prioritized health care and senior issues, working to mentor the next generation of leaders.

She remarked on the talent in her district, emphasizing the importance of continued advocacy against what she termed the “extreme MAGA agenda.”

Her retirement follows recent announcements from other long-serving Democrats, including Illinois Senator Dick Durbin, who is also retiring after 44 years in Congress.

Schakowsky thanked her staff and constituents, asserting that the community is healthier and more prosperous due to their collective efforts.

While she will miss her elected role, Schakowsky vowed to continue fighting for issues such as equal rights, universal health care, and environmental protections.

She encouraged her community to remain engaged and resist policies she views as harmful, stating, “When we fight, we win!”
