Newsom Demands DOJ Records as Questions Grow Over Reported Federal Investigation

California Gov. Gavin Newsom is demanding records from the Department of Justice as he accuses President Donald Trump of orchestrating a politically motivated investigation against him and his wife. But reports surrounding the controversy indicate the investigations may have begun long before Newsom publicly leveled those accusations, raising new questions about the governor’s claims that the probe was initiated as retaliation for his political ambitions.

The move comes after Newsom publicly revealed that he and his wife are reportedly the subjects of an ongoing federal investigation, a matter that has quickly become the latest flashpoint in the increasingly contentious relationship between the Democratic governor and President Donald Trump.

In a statement posted to X, Newsom accused the administration of conducting what he described as a politically motivated inquiry and argued that the public deserves greater transparency regarding the actions of federal officials.

“My office is demanding the Trump Administration release any and all records on the Trump DOJ’s politically motivated, baseless fishing expedition,” Newsom wrote. “The American people deserve to know who ordered this abuse of power and how far it goes.”

While Newsom has attempted to blame the Trump administration for the investigation it should be noted that the investigation actually began under the Biden administration.

The governor’s office formally submitted the request under the Freedom of Information Act, the federal law that allows individuals to seek access to records maintained by executive branch agencies. The request seeks communications containing the terms “Gavin Newsom,” “Jennifer Siebel Newsom,” or “Newsom” between January 2025 and the present.

According to the letter, the governor is requesting a broad range of materials, including memoranda, emails, text messages, and Signal messages involving members of the Justice Department’s executive leadership.

The request specifically seeks records involving senior department officials, including former Attorney General Pam Bondi, former Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove, and former Deputy Attorney General and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

Newsom’s office has given the Justice Department a deadline of July 6, 2026, to provide the requested documents, citing the timelines established under federal law. The letter also requests that any denial be accompanied by a detailed explanation identifying the legal basis for withholding records.

The dispute comes amid broader questions surrounding a reported federal investigation involving the governor and his inner circle. Newsom disclosed Monday that he and his wife are subjects of a DOJ inquiry that reportedly includes whistleblower allegations concerning Siebel Newsom’s taxes, as well as a separate corruption investigation connected to former Newsom chief of staff Dana Williamson.

The Department of Justice has not publicly confirmed the existence of the investigation, nor has it commented on Newsom’s allegations. President Trump has also not publicly addressed the governor’s claims.

In a video posted online Monday, Newsom argued that federal authorities were casting an overly broad net in search of evidence.

“In recent days, federal agents have knocked on the doors of family, friends, and former employees, not because they found a crime, because they’re simply trying to find one,” he said.

The governor also suggested that the reported investigation may be connected to his political future, claiming Trump views him as a potential rival because he is considering a presidential run and has been a vocal critic of the president.

The reported inquiry appears to focus in part on Siebel Newsom’s nonprofit activities. According to previous reporting cited in the article, Newsom directed more than $4.4 million from special interests and wealthy donors to the California Partners Project, one of Siebel Newsom’s flagship initiatives.

As the dispute unfolds, both sides appear poised for a prolonged battle over transparency, accountability, and the proper limits of federal investigative power. While government oversight remains a critical function, the controversy also highlights how political conflicts can increasingly consume public institutions all while the partisan actors obscure their actual origins.
