MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi reportedly used his Sunday program to voice concerns about the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, telling viewers he feels a “deep unease” about celebrating the nation’s founding and arguing that America has failed to resolve longstanding racial issues.
The comments come as the country prepares to mark a historic milestone next month, commemorating two and a half centuries since its founding. While many Americans view the anniversary as an opportunity to celebrate the nation’s history, institutions, and ideals, Velshi said he has mixed feelings about the occasion.
During a lengthy monologue, the anchor argued that national anniversaries often present an incomplete picture of history by overlooking what he described as the racial dynamics that have shaped the country since its founding.
“Anniversaries are imperfect records of the thing which is being celebrated,” Velshi said. He contended that celebrations of American history frequently gloss over issues connected to slavery and race, which he argued remain unresolved today.
Velshi went further, saying that America has never fully confronted what he called its “racist past” and the legacy of slavery. According to the MSNBC host, those unresolved issues continue to influence modern political debates and social tensions.
Looking ahead to the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration, Velshi said the anniversary is arriving during what he described as a period of significant unrest.
“In one month, America will mark the 250th anniversary of its founding,” he said. “Like previous anniversaries, there is a deep unease about this. I feel a deep unease about the celebrations to which I am invited to mark the 250th anniversary of our so-called democracy.”
Velshi, who was born in Kenya and raised in Canada before becoming a U.S. citizen in 2015, continued by outlining the reasons behind his concerns.
He argued that the nation is once again grappling with deep political and social divisions that he attributes to unresolved racial politics. In his remarks, he claimed that women and Black Americans have seen rights diminished and asserted that the Voting Rights Act has effectively been weakened.
The anchor also criticized efforts by some states to redraw congressional districts ahead of upcoming elections, arguing that such actions have reduced political influence for Black Americans.
As an example, Velshi pointed to Louisiana, noting that the state recently approved a congressional map that eliminated Black-majority districts.
His comments reflected a broader theme throughout the segment: a tension between celebrating America’s ideals and expressing concern about the country’s current direction.
Despite his criticism, Velshi acknowledged that many Americans may still feel pride in the nation’s founding principles. He suggested that it is possible to admire the ideals the country strives toward while simultaneously expressing dissatisfaction with present-day conditions.
“If you’ve got conflicting feelings about America’s upcoming anniversary — like you want to celebrate the ideals that America strives for, which are noble and should be celebrated, but lament the state of the country — you’re not alone,” Velshi said. “At least I’m with you on this.”
The remarks highlight the differing perspectives surrounding America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, a milestone that arrives amid ongoing debates about the nation’s history, identity, and future. As preparations continue for the celebration, those discussions are likely to remain part of the broader national conversation.
