President Donald Trump proudly unveiled a new Boeing aircraft on Friday, praising the jet provided by the Qatari government as an extraordinary piece of aviation and describing it as “the world’s most luxurious plane.”
Speaking before a crowd at Joint Base Andrews, Trump highlighted the aircraft’s size, design, and capabilities while explaining why he sought access to the plane amid ongoing issues involving the presidential fleet.
The aircraft, valued at approximately $400 million, immediately became the centerpiece of Trump’s remarks as he discussed the challenges associated with older government planes and the importance of projecting American strength and prestige on the world stage.
“We were, had a little bit of a log jam with the, I call them the ‘normal 747s,’” Trump said.
The president explained that he approached the Emir of Qatar after learning about the newly acquired aircraft.
“And I asked the Emir if we could use the brand new 747 that he got when we first heard about it,” Trump told the audience.
Trump said the request was driven by practical concerns, noting that the current planes used by the government are aging.
“And I said, ‘We’d like to use it for a little while,’ because our planes are pretty old,” he explained.
The president contrasted his decision with what he described as the instincts of more conventional political leaders.
“See, a normal president wouldn’t do this,” Trump said. “A normal president wants to stay away from aircraft.”
According to Trump, concerns about public criticism often discourage government officials from pursuing major upgrades or acquisitions. He argued, however, that the United States should ensure its presidential transportation reflects the nation’s status.
“We don’t want to order any aircraft so that everybody thinks — but our country has to be represented properly,” he said.
Trump also discussed the physical dimensions of the aircraft, noting that existing infrastructure had been designed with larger planes in mind.
“And the hangar was built for the large plane,” he said. “The other plane is such a difference in size.”
The president reserved his highest praise for the aircraft’s craftsmanship and luxury.
“But there will never be one like this,” Trump said. “This is very unique.”
He continued by describing the jet as a remarkable achievement in aviation design.
“This is considered the world’s most luxurious plane when it was built,” Trump said. “It was built at a level that will probably never be seen again.”
In a lighter moment, Trump turned his attention to the press corps gathered at the event and offered reporters a tour of the aircraft after his departure.
“And if the press would like, I don’t know if it’s going to help me with stories,” Trump joked. “I don’t think there’ll be any difference.”
The president appeared amused by what he perceived as a positive reaction from members of the media.
“The press is actually — Oh, look at them! They are actually smiling,” he said while looking toward the press pool.
“Are you smiling? First time I’ve seen them smile in years!” Trump added. “They don’t smile at Republicans. They should smile at Republicans because we’re the ones that make America great.”
Trump said reporters would be given an opportunity to see the aircraft firsthand.
“When I leave they’ll take you for a little tour,” he said. “You’ll see something you won’t even believe.”
The president also referenced future international travel, mentioning prospective trips to Turkey and China later in the year.
The unveiling comes amid ongoing discussions surrounding the aircraft’s future. Last July, Republican members of the Senate Appropriations Committee voted against an amendment that would have prohibited Trump from keeping the Qatari plane after his presidency concludes.
For now, however, Trump made clear that his focus is on showcasing what he views as a one-of-a-kind aircraft that reflects the image and stature of the United States on the global stage.
