United Airlines Updates Passenger Rules, Warns Headphone-Free Streaming Could Lead to Removal or Ban

United Airlines has updated its passenger guidelines to make clear that travelers who play music or watch videos without headphones could face serious consequences, including being removed from a flight or even permanently banned from the airline.

The policy change comes as part of an update to the airline’s “Contract of Carriage,” the document that outlines the rules passengers must follow when flying with United. According to the updated guidelines, passengers who fail to use headphones while listening to audio or video content may now fall under the category of individuals the airline can refuse service to.

The rule was reportedly added in late February and places headphone-free streaming alongside other behaviors that could result in removal from a flight.

Under the contract, United reserves the right to remove a passenger when doing so “may be necessary for the safety” of the individual or others on board.

The section of the policy that includes the headphone requirement also lists other types of behavior that could lead to disciplinary action. These include disorderly conduct, improper clothing, and other actions that the airline determines may disrupt the flight or affect the safety and comfort of passengers.

Infractions under this category can result in penalties that range from temporary restrictions on flying with the airline to permanent bans.

United officials said the rule is not entirely new but is now being made more explicit as technology and in-flight connectivity continue to expand.

“We’ve always encouraged customers to use headphones when listening to audio content — and our Wi-Fi rules already remind customers to use headphones,” the airline said in a statement to NBC News.

The company explained that recent changes to onboard internet service played a role in the decision to formally add the requirement to its contract.

“With the expansion of Starlink, it seemed like a good time to make that even clearer by adding it to the contract of carriage,” United said.

The airline recently began rolling out Starlink satellite internet service across parts of its fleet, allowing passengers to access free in-flight Wi-Fi.

Last month, United announced that more than 300 aircraft in its regional fleet had already been equipped with the high-speed satellite service. The company also said it expects to install Starlink on an additional 500 planes by the end of the year.

The expanded connectivity allows passengers to stream content and access online services during flights, which could lead to more situations where travelers play audio or video content on personal devices.

By requiring headphones, United appears to be attempting to prevent the kind of noise disruptions that can quickly turn an already crowded cabin into an uncomfortable environment for fellow passengers.

For travelers who forget to pack headphones, United says it has a solution.

Passengers who do not have earbuds with them can request a complimentary pair while on board. Many aircraft are also equipped with seatback entertainment systems that support Bluetooth connections, allowing travelers to use their own wireless headphones to watch movies or listen to audio content during the flight.

With in-flight connectivity rapidly expanding, the airline’s updated rules make clear that basic etiquette—like keeping personal entertainment private—remains a priority for maintaining order and comfort in the skies.

United’s revised contract serves as a reminder that while modern aircraft increasingly resemble flying living rooms, passengers are still expected to follow the rules designed to keep the experience manageable for everyone on board.
