Michelle Obama Complains of Alleged Expense of Living at the White House

Michelle Obama recently expressed her frustrations about the costs associated with living in the White House during an appearance on “The Diary of a CEO” podcast.

The former first lady highlighted the challenges of raising children in such a high-profile environment, noting the dangers they faced, including death threats.

Obama explained that many people are unaware of the expenses involved in White House life. While housing and staff are covered, she pointed out that they had to pay for all food and travel.

“It’s expensive to live in the White House,” she said, emphasizing that even travel for her children on the First Lady’s plane, known as Bright Star, was an expense they incurred.

She reflected on the financial implications of her husband’s presidency, stating, “You’re running for two years and not earning an income, so all of that was in my mind.”

This isn’t the first time she has discussed the financial aspects of their time in the White House.

In a 2018 interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she humorously recounted the high costs of food, mentioning a $500 peach that made her wary of her husband expressing pleasure over extravagant items.

The Obamas entered the White House with a net worth of approximately $1.3 million, but their financial situation has since changed dramatically.

They have reportedly increased their net worth to around $70 million, marking one of the largest financial gains for a presidential family in history, second only to Bill Clinton.

Overall, Michelle Obama’s comments shed light on the unexpected financial burdens of living in the White House, contrasting with the public perception of the presidency.
