Trump and Rubio Weigh Firing Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle Amid Misconduct Allegations

President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are weighing whether to remove U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle following a string of bombshell reports accusing her of misconduct during her time in Athens.

According to a senior U.S. official who spoke with The Associated Press on Sunday, both Trump and Rubio are “extremely p‑‑‑‑d off” over Guilfoyle’s conduct, and a decision on her future could come as early as this week.

The official said Rubio, who was warmly greeted by Guilfoyle in Athens last week as the reports swirled, is especially angry about the controversy.

A federal watchdog is also reportedly looking into the allegations, which include claims that the ambassador accepted gifts or favors from wealthy Greek businessmen.

The possible shake-up follows explosive claims from Eric Deters, a longtime Trump ally and MAGA donor, who alleges Guilfoyle asked him to wire her $100,000 to cover her American Express bill ahead of her July 2025 Senate confirmation hearing, in exchange for access to top Trump administration officials.

“It won’t show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express,” Guilfoyle wrote to Deters in a Signal message dated July 3, 2025, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

In an interview, Deters said Guilfoyle made it very clear, and that the text messages make it very clear, that she was “so desperate” for him to send the $100,000. He claimed she offered to become his “ride or die in the Trump world” if he paid her, and he described their relationship as a “quid pro quo.”

Guilfoyle has denied the allegations.

Trump briefly addressed the matter Friday when reporters questioned him outside the White House.

“I just heard about it, too bad,” the president said. “I don’t know too much, but she was always very nice.”

Rubio declined to comment on the allegations while in Greece last week. He told reporters it was not his responsibility to “respond every time someone decides to give the media something without any advance warning, without having any chance to look at it and see what’s in there.”

The Journal also reported that Guilfoyle allegedly bragged about her connections to wealthy Greek businessmen who paid for her luxury travel in exchange for her using her diplomatic position to lobby on behalf of their business interests.

In addition, the ambassador reportedly tried to secure an invitation from an American businessman in Davos, Switzerland, to a dinner honoring Eric Trump, the president’s second-eldest son.

“You know, I can deliver the world to you. Which you deserve,” Guilfoyle told the businessman in audio reviewed by the Journal. “I’m going to make you a lot of f—ing money.”

A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Athens defended Guilfoyle in a statement to the Journal, saying she had “faithfully followed State Department ethics and gift reporting guidelines.”

Guilfoyle was once married to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, and was later engaged to the president’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr. The couple split in 2024.

The controversy has drawn scrutiny even from top Republican lawmakers.
