Maria Bartiromo’s shock departure from Fox News this week is being read by some media observers as the latest sign that President Donald Trump’s once-ironclad hold over American media is beginning to loosen.
Fox announced Bartiromo’s exit with a terse statement, notably declining to give her an on-air farewell. Her bio was scrubbed from the Fox Business website within hours, despite her having already been off the air since August 9.
Bartiromo’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, pushed back on reports characterizing her departure as a firing, calling such claims false. However, Status reporter Oliver Darcy offered a different account, reporting that Bartiromo had allegedly breached her employment contract by leaking confidential internal editorial guidance to the White House.
That guidance reportedly instructed Fox staff to avoid amplifying some of Trump’s unsubstantiated election conspiracy claims, a directive aimed at shielding the network from further costly legal exposure after its $787 million settlement in the Dominion defamation case.
Trump responded to the news on social media, expressing his displeasure and warning that Bartiromo’s fans “will not be happy” with the network’s decision.
Beyond the Bartiromo situation, there are broader signs of fracturing within conservative media circles. Fox anchor John Roberts has publicly said he’s “puzzled” by Trump’s strategy regarding the conflict in Iran, while commentator Marc Thiessen has criticized Vice President JD Vance’s negotiations with Iran. Prominent Trump allies including Tucker Carlson and Joe Rogan have also emerged as vocal critics of the administration’s handling of the war.
The New York Times reported in late July that once-unified MAGA-aligned commentators, including figures like Megyn Kelly and Benny Johnson, are losing viewers amid infighting and shifting loyalties within right-wing media, creating headaches for Republicans heading into the midterms.
Fox’s willingness to part ways with Bartiromo despite her past defense of Trump’s election claims stands in contrast to how the network handled her during the Dominion controversy, when she remained employed despite her role in promoting those claims on air.
As Trump’s influence over conservative media appears to be entering a new phase, with networks like Fox showing less hesitation to distance themselves from him, questions remain about how the shifting media landscape will shape the remainder of his term and the broader Republican coalition heading into a critical election year.
