Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio, was reportedly hospitalized Sunday after being involved in a hit-and-run crash while traveling to church, according to her congressional office and local authorities.
Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in a vehicle that was struck while on its way to a church service, her office said in a statement. The longtime Ohio lawmaker is being treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
According to her office, Kaptur is “active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries.”
Her staff also said they are awaiting additional information as the Toledo Police Department continues its investigation into the incident.
“We look forward to additional information from Toledo Police as they investigate the accident,” Kaptur’s office wrote in a statement posted on X.
The statement also expressed appreciation for the emergency personnel who responded to the crash.
“Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash,” the statement said.
Kaptur also thanked the many constituents who reached out after learning of the accident.
“She expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon,” her office added.
The Toledo Police Department responded to the crash at approximately 10:48 a.m. EDT near the intersection of Detroit Avenue and Central Avenue, according to Toledo Police Sgt. Mohamad Nasser.
Nasser told The Hill that officers were dispatched to investigate what was classified as a “hit-skip” crash. Under Ohio law, a hit-skip offense is treated the same as a hit-and-run, referring to a driver who leaves the scene of an accident without stopping.
Police said two individuals, including Kaptur, were transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities noted that the investigation remains in its early stages. Accident investigators from the Toledo Police Department have also responded to the scene as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Kaptur has represented Ohio’s 9th Congressional District since 1983 and is currently seeking reelection to an 18th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. She is the longest-serving member of Ohio’s 17-member congressional delegation, having served more than two decades longer than any of the state’s other members of Congress.
She is set to face former Ohio state Rep. Derek Merrin, a Republican, in this November’s general election. Kaptur narrowly defeated Merrin in their previous contest in 2024 by a margin of 2,382 votes.
Following news of the crash, Merrin issued a statement expressing concern for the congresswoman and others injured.
“Please join me in praying for her speedy recovery and all those injured in the crash,” Merrin wrote on X.
Ohio Sen. Jon Husted, R-Ohio, also offered his support, saying he and his wife, Tina, were praying for Kaptur’s recovery.
“We hope the person responsible for this reckless act is apprehended quickly and held accountable,” Husted wrote on X.
Several of Kaptur’s colleagues in Congress also shared messages of support.
Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., said he was praying for the Ohio lawmaker and wished her a speedy recovery.
“May she be restored to full health in short order,” Biggs wrote.
Ohio Rep. Warren Davidson, R, echoed those sentiments, writing that he was praying for Kaptur’s “full and swift recovery” while also expressing hope that law enforcement quickly identifies the driver who fled the scene and holds that individual accountable.
