President Donald Trump issued a stark warning Friday after thousands of migrants overwhelmed the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, arguing that the United States could face a similar crisis if political leadership changes in the coming years.
Speaking with Fox News senior White House correspondent Jacqui Heinrich, Trump pointed to the dramatic scenes unfolding at Spain’s border with Morocco as a cautionary example of what he believes could happen in the United States.
“It’s terrible. Remember that picture. That’s going to be us in three years if the wrong side gets in,” Trump told Heinrich, according to a post she shared on X.
The president also issued a broader political warning, saying, “If the Democrats get in, you will not live a very good life.”
Trump’s comments came as Spain scrambled to respond to a surge of migrants crossing into Ceuta, prompting the government to deploy military forces to the region. The influx has overwhelmed local authorities, and dozens of migrants have reportedly died during attempts to make the dangerous crossings.
Officials on the ground described the situation as rapidly spiraling beyond normal enforcement capabilities.
Rachid Sbihi, who leads an association representing Spain’s Civil Guard officers in Ceuta, told The Associated Press that authorities are dealing with an enormous number of crossings, though determining an exact figure remains difficult.
“The situation is absolute chaos,” Sbihi said. “It’s not possible to give precise numbers, but there are thousands of migrants crossing.”
The crisis also drew the attention of Spain’s national leadership. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez traveled to Ceuta on Friday, where he condemned the mass crossings and described them as an attack on the country’s sovereignty.
Calling the situation “a violation of Spain’s territorial integrity,” Sánchez said information had spread rapidly through networks operated by human trafficking organizations, fueling the unprecedented surge.
“That has spread like wildfire during these last few hours through the networks of mafias that traffic in human beings and has produced an avalanche of the characteristics and dimension that we experienced yesterday,” Sánchez said.
Images and video from the border showed massive crowds of migrants, most of them men, pouring into Ceuta through the Tarajal border area. Many were seen swimming around coastal barriers in an effort to reach Spanish territory.
Spanish authorities have responded by mobilizing military resources to help regain control of the situation. According to Sánchez, the armed forces are establishing a temporary processing center where migrants who are apprehended will be documented before being deported.
The crisis marks another chapter in a border that has experienced major surges before. In 2021, more than 8,000 migrants entered Spain through Ceuta over the course of just two days, triggering a significant diplomatic dispute between Spain and neighboring Morocco.
As Spain confronts another large-scale migration wave, Trump pointed to the scenes in Ceuta as a warning for the United States, arguing that the images unfolding overseas should serve as a reminder of what he believes could happen domestically if the country follows a different political course.
