Veteran Hollywood Actor James Handy Killed in Shocking Stabbing; Suspect Allegedly Confesses to Police

A longtime Hollywood character actor known for appearances in films such as “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jumanji,” and “Taps” was tragically killed this week in what authorities describe as a brutal stabbing attack allegedly carried out by his girlfriend’s son.

Police responded Wednesday morning to a residence in the 19200 block of Erwin Street in Tarzana after receiving a disturbing call from a man who reportedly declared, “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered 81-year-old actor James Handy unconscious in the front yard of the home. According to police, Handy had suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest.

Emergency responders rushed the veteran actor to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead.

The shocking killing has left many questions unanswered as investigators continue working to determine what led to the deadly confrontation.

According to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department, a short time after the attack, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill allegedly approached officers and informed them that he was the individual they were searching for.

Authorities say Gledhill is the son of Handy’s girlfriend and had been living with his mother at the residence at the time of the incident.

Gledhill was arrested on suspicion of murder. His bail has been set at $2 million.

As investigators piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack, officials have not yet identified a motive. Police have said it remains unclear what triggered the violence Wednesday morning.

The death of Handy marks a tragic end to a lengthy acting career that stretched back to the 1970s. Over the decades, he became a familiar face to moviegoers and television audiences alike, building a résumé that included nearly 150 acting credits on IMDb.

Many fans will recognize Handy from his role as bartender Jimmy in the blockbuster film “Top Gun: Maverick.” He also appeared in the 1995 film “Jumanji,” starring Robin Williams, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, and Jonathan Hyde, where he played an exterminator.

Beyond the big screen, Handy accumulated an extensive list of television appearances. His credits included roles in “The West Wing,” “9-1-1,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “CSI: NY,” “The Young and the Restless,” “Castle,” “Criminal Minds,” “Cold Case,” “Without a Trace,” “ER,” “The X-Files,” and “Mulaney.”

For decades, Handy worked steadily in Hollywood, becoming one of those dependable performers whose face audiences often recognized even if they did not immediately know his name.

Now, friends, fans, and colleagues are left mourning an actor whose career spanned generations, while investigators seek answers about the circumstances behind a killing that transformed a quiet residential neighborhood into a crime scene. As the case moves forward, the unanswered question remains what could have led to such a deadly and irreversible act of violence.
