Trump Blasts GOP Defectors After House Passes War Powers Resolution on Iran

President Donald Trump sharply criticized four Republican lawmakers on Thursday after they joined House Democrats in supporting a war powers resolution aimed at limiting his authority regarding the ongoing conflict involving the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The unusual vote marked a rare break between the president and members of his own party, drawing an immediate and forceful response from Trump on his Truth Social platform.

In a post published Thursday morning, Trump dismissed the House action as insignificant while accusing both Democrats and the four Republicans who supported the measure of undermining his efforts during a critical moment in negotiations.

“Yesterday, in a meaningless vote, the House voted, 4 bad Republicans and all of the Dumocrats, to limit my War Powers, right in the middle of my final negotiations to end the War with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump wrote.

The president went on to question the motivations of those who backed the resolution, arguing that lawmakers were acting against the country’s interests despite being aware of the status of ongoing negotiations.

“Who would do such an unpatriotic thing,” Trump continued. “They know where the negotiations stand.”

Trump also took direct aim at Democrats, accusing them of being motivated by what he described as “Trump Derangement Syndrome” and claiming they would rather see the country fail than allow him to secure another political victory.

But some of his harshest criticism was reserved for the four Republicans who broke ranks with party leadership and the White House. Trump singled out Reps. Tom Barrett of Michigan, Warren Davidson of Ohio, Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, and longtime Trump critic Thomas Massie of Kentucky.

“The four Republicans, that’s a whole other story – They’re GRANDSTANDERS! They should be ashamed of themselves,” Trump wrote.

The resolution passed the House by a narrow 215-208 vote. If ultimately enacted, it would direct the president to withdraw U.S. forces from Iran.

Despite the House vote, the measure faces significant obstacles before becoming law. The resolution now moves to the Senate, where its prospects remain uncertain. Even if the Senate were to approve it, the measure would almost certainly face a presidential veto from Trump. Additionally, Congress would likely lack the votes necessary to override such a veto.

Still, the vote represents one of the most notable congressional challenges to Trump’s handling of the conflict. While disagreements over foreign policy are common, direct efforts by lawmakers to limit presidential war powers during an active conflict are comparatively rare and often expose divisions within both political parties.

According to the report, Republican leadership had previously attempted to delay consideration of the resolution when it became clear they might not have the votes to defeat it. However, the War Powers Resolution contains procedural requirements that force Congress to consider such measures within a limited period, ultimately bringing the proposal to the House floor on Wednesday.

The episode highlights continuing tensions in Washington over the balance between congressional authority and presidential power during military conflicts. While supporters and opponents of the resolution disagree on the proper course of action, the vote underscored growing debate over how wars are managed and who should bear responsibility for decisions that can carry significant consequences both abroad and at home.
