Representative Ilhan Omar, a prominent voice in the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, has now reportedly recently expressed grave concerns about the state of the United States, declaring it has become “one of the worst countries” in the world.
Her remarks come in the wake of escalating tensions surrounding anti-Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests, where the National Guard has been deployed in response to civil unrest.
In an interview with the left-leaning program “Democracy Now,” Omar, who fled Somalia in 1995 amid civil strife, reflected on the current political climate in the U.S., stating that she has never witnessed such turmoil.
“To have democracy, a beacon of hope for the world, now turned into one of the worst countries, where the military are in our streets without any regard for people’s constitutional rights, is shocking,” she said.
Omar criticized President Donald Trump for what she described as a dictator-like display of power, particularly referencing the military parade that the president funded.
Omar articulated a deep sense of betrayal, insisting that the country no longer aligns with the ideals set forth by the Founding Fathers or the Constitution.
“This is not the country we were born in, nor the country we believe in,” she asserted. Her comments resonate with her long-standing critique of U.S. policies, especially regarding social justice and immigration.
As a member of the so-called “Squad,” Omar has consistently highlighted perceived injustices in American society. Her family’s experience as Somali refugees has shaped her worldview, leading her to advocate for a more equitable America.
“I grew up in an extremely unjust society,” she recalled, emphasizing her belief that the U.S. had failed to fulfill its promise of justice for all.
This isn’t the first time Omar has drawn parallels between the U.S. and other nations.
In 2021, she controversially equated the actions of the United States and Israel with those of groups like Hamas and the Taliban, calling for accountability for all parties involved in conflicts.
Omar’s statements reflect a broader frustration among many progressives who feel that the U.S. is straying from its foundational principles of justice and equality.
As she continues to advocate for change, her comments are likely to ignite further debate about the direction of American democracy and the role of government in addressing civil rights.
