China Threatens Nancy Pelosi if She Visits Taiwan

China is threatening stark consequences should Nancy Pelosi visit Taiwan saying such a visit would damage US-China relations CNBC Reports.

Pelosi is scheduled to visit Japan this weekend and some media outlets in the region have reported that she was planning on visiting Taiwan, as well.

The visit however, has not been confirmed by her office or the Taiwanese government.

Regardless, it has drawn a response from China, that lays claim to the island nation as part of its “One China” initiative.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian went on record with reports boldly stating that China opposes all interactions between leaders of the two nations.

This weekend is the 43rd anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act which guides relations in place of formal diplomatic ones and provides for a commitment to give Taiwan the means to defend itself through arms sales.

Newt Gingrich was the last United States Speaker of the House to visit the country, when he did in 1997, visiting then-President Lee Tenf-hui.
