Florida authorities are investigating after a specialized wheelchair belonging to a disabled senior pit bull was stolen from the porch of a hospice resident, leaving the dog unable to walk.
The St. Cloud Police Department said in a statement that a local dog rescue organization was seeking the public’s help following the theft.
Pitty Party of Central Florida said the missing wheelchair belonged to Baby, a senior dog with a condition known as “walking pets.” Baby depends on the customized device for mobility and cannot walk without it, according to the rescue group.
The wheelchair cost approximately $800 after shipping and was specifically designed to accommodate Baby’s condition. Because the equipment was made for her particular needs, the rescue said it cannot be replaced easily.
The organization also noted that the specialized wheelchair may be difficult for another dog to use, raising questions about why someone would take it from the residence.
The device was reportedly stolen from the porch of a hospice resident who has been caring for Baby.
Pitty Party of Central Florida is now appealing to members of the community for assistance in recovering or replacing the wheelchair. The group asked anyone with information about the theft, or anyone able to help secure a replacement device, to contact the rescue directly.
No suspect was identified in the police department’s post, and authorities did not provide any additional information about when the theft occurred.
The investigation remains focused on locating the expensive mobility device so Baby can regain her ability to move with the assistance of her specialized chair.
