President Donald Trump issued a rare and striking public rebuke of Israel on Wednesday following a military strike that targeted a major natural gas field jointly owned by Iran and Qatar—an attack that quickly set off a chain reaction across an already volatile region.
According to Iranian state media, Israeli forces struck the South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf, igniting parts of the facility. The move appears to have triggered swift retaliation from Iran, which launched its own attack on a key fuel hub in Qatar. The escalation comes as Iran continues to effectively block the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global chokepoint through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply flows.
The broader conflict has already sent shockwaves through energy markets. Oil and gas prices have surged since Feb. 28, when Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu initiated military action against Iran. “Israel, out of anger for what has taken place in the Middle East, has violently lashed out” at the South Pars field, Trump wrote, adding that only a “relatively small section” of the facility had been hit. Still, he warned that the consequences of such actions could spiral quickly, especially when misunderstandings lead to retaliation against uninvolved parties.
Trump also issued a firm directive aimed at preventing further escalation. “NO MORE ATTACKS WILL BE MADE BY ISRAEL” on the South Pars field, he declared, drawing a line while leaving open the possibility of a forceful U.S. response if Iran continues to target Qatar.
While projecting strength, the president also signaled unease about the long-term consequences of expanded conflict. He warned that if Qatar’s liquefied natural gas facilities were attacked again, the United States could respond with overwhelming force against the entire South Pars field—an outcome he made clear he would prefer to avoid.
“I do not want to authorize this level of violence and destruction because of the long term implications,” Trump wrote, underscoring the difficult balance between deterrence and restraint.
Yet even as the president sought to clarify the U.S. position, conflicting reports quickly emerged. Just minutes after Trump’s post, Axios reporter Barak Ravid cited anonymous U.S. and Israeli officials who claimed that Washington had prior knowledge of the Israeli strike and had even approved it as part of a strategy to pressure Iran.
According to that account, the administration’s posture may have shifted only after Iran retaliated against Qatar’s energy infrastructure, raising questions about how events were managed behind the scenes.
