The Philadelphia Flyers announced Friday that longtime radio announcer Tim Saunders has been suspended for two games following what the team described as “inappropriate” comments made during a recent broadcast, underscoring the organization’s stance on professionalism and accountability.
According to the Flyers, the incident occurred during a television timeout in Thursday night’s game against the Buffalo Sabres. What was expected to be a routine commercial break instead turned into an awkward and widely circulated moment after the radio broadcast failed to cut away from the booth.
As the ad break was supposed to begin, the radio feed remained live. For several seconds, listeners heard someone humming into an open microphone, followed by dead air. Moments later, Saunders made a remark that the team later deemed unacceptable, saying, “While you’re down there, would you mind blowing me?” The comment appeared to be made in jest, but its unintended broadcast immediately raised concerns.
Color commentator Todd Fedoruk quickly realized something was wrong and attempted to intervene. “I think we’re still on the air, Tim,” Fedoruk said, alerting Saunders that the microphone might still be live. Saunders initially seemed to believe Fedoruk was joking, laughing before responding, “No, we’re not. Are we?” The exchange confirmed that the broadcast had indeed remained on the air throughout the moment.
By Friday morning, the Flyers moved swiftly to address the situation. In a statement released by the organization, the team acknowledged the comment and made clear it did not align with the standards expected of those representing the franchise.
“We are aware of the inappropriate comment made during last night’s radio broadcast in the TV timeout of the Flyers—Sabres game,” the statement read. “These remarks do not reflect the standards of conduct or values we expect from anyone associated with our organization.”
The Flyers announced that, effective immediately, Saunders would be suspended for two games. The discipline was issued in coordination with the team’s radio partner, 97.5 The Fanatic, signaling a unified response to the incident.
“Effective immediately, the Flyers, along with our radio partners, 97.5 The Fanatic, have issued a two-game suspension while we address this matter with all parties involved,” the statement continued.
The organization also offered an apology to listeners and fans, emphasizing that the matter was being taken seriously. “We take this matter very seriously, and sincerely apologize to our listeners, fans and all those affected by these comments,” the team said.
The incident highlights the heightened scrutiny placed on broadcasters and media figures, particularly in live sports environments where microphones are often hot and mistakes can be instantly amplified. While the remark was made offhandedly and without apparent malicious intent, the Flyers’ response reflects a zero-tolerance approach when it comes to language aired during official broadcasts.
By acting quickly and issuing discipline, the Flyers signaled that maintaining professionalism on the air remains a priority, regardless of intent. The suspension serves as a reminder that those entrusted with representing major sports organizations are expected to uphold certain standards at all times, especially when speaking into a live microphone.
Saunders’ suspension will keep him off the air for the next two games as the team and its broadcast partners work to ensure similar incidents are avoided in the future.
