While President Donald J. Trump has long stood shoulder to shoulder with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in both word and deed, recent developments however reportedly reveal a deepening rift between the Trump White House and the Israeli leader — driven in part by Israel’s aggressive military actions in Syria and Gaza, and the strain they place on broader U.S. diplomatic goals.
According to a report from Axios, senior members of Trump’s national security team have expressed mounting exasperation over what they perceive as Netanyahu’s recklessness, particularly in the wake of an Israeli airstrike that destroyed the only Catholic church in Gaza.
While the Israeli government publicly called the bombing a “mistake” after pressure from Washington, that explanation did little to calm White House concerns.
“Bibi acted like a madman,” one White House official reportedly told Axios. “He bombs everything all the time.” Another unnamed U.S. official compared Netanyahu to “a child who just won’t behave,” underscoring growing impatience inside the West Wing.
The incident sparked an immediate reaction from President Trump himself, who made a direct and reportedly heated call to Netanyahu demanding an explanation. Trump insisted on a public admission of error from the Israeli government, which was ultimately issued.
Still, for all the behind-the-scenes friction, Trump’s public support for Netanyahu has remained remarkably consistent. On June 25, amid escalating legal troubles for the Israeli prime minister, Trump decried what he saw as a politically motivated prosecution.
“I was shocked to hear that the State of Israel, which has just had one of its Greatest Moments in History, and is strongly led by Bibi Netanyahu, is continuing its ridiculous Witch Hunt against their Great War Time Prime Minister!” Trump declared on Truth Social. “Bibi Netanyahu was a WARRIOR, like perhaps no other Warrior in the History of Israel.”
The former prime minister is currently entangled in a high-profile corruption trial in Israel — a case Trump has likened to his own battles with what he calls a politically weaponized justice system.
On June 29, the president took a harder line, warning Israel that future U.S. aid could be at risk if the charges against Netanyahu weren’t dropped, a move seen by some insiders as an attempt to keep a key ally politically viable.
Even so, many close to Trump are growing weary of Netanyahu’s unpredictability, suggesting it is creating obstacles for the administration’s efforts in the region. “The feeling is that every day there is something new,” one U.S. official told Axios. “What the f***?”
Despite these frustrations, the broader relationship between the Trump administration and Israel remains rooted in a strong strategic alliance — one forged through historic diplomacy, regional peace efforts, and unwavering support for Israeli sovereignty.
But the president’s balancing act between loyalty and accountability may soon be tested, as pressure mounts for greater coherence and stability in Middle East policy.
As the situation unfolds, Trump appears to be walking a fine line: defending a wartime ally while quietly signaling that even close friends must act with responsibility in a region where every move carries global consequences.
