In a pointed commentary on the current immigration debate, George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley reportedly addressed the recent calls from some Democratic leaders for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to cease operations in cities like Los Angeles.
Following a rise in civil unrest linked to an ICE operation, Turley labeled these demands as “otherworldly,” asserting that a withdrawal of federal forces is simply unfeasible.
During an appearance on Fox News’s America Reports, Turley responded to the escalating tensions, noting that federal law enforcement has a mandate to uphold immigration laws.
“The federal government is tasked with enforcing federal law,” he stated, emphasizing that any attempt to retreat from these responsibilities would be unrealistic. His remarks come amid rising frustrations over ICE’s presence in sanctuary cities, where local officials have resisted federal immigration enforcement.
Turley pointed out that the notion of reducing ICE operations as a means to restore order is misguided.
He observed that increasing federal personnel in response to local non-compliance would be necessary to ensure the enforcement of immigration laws. “If you’re a sanctuary city and obstructing enforcement, you’ll have a larger federal presence,” he explained.
The professor also referenced a controversial request from a Los Angeles city council member, who suggested that the police chief establish a warning system to alert residents about upcoming ICE operations.
Turley dismissed this proposal, noting that such actions could constitute a federal crime, further complicating the already tense relationship between federal and local authorities.
As protests erupted in multiple cities, including Los Angeles and Portland, following ICE operations, the divide between federal enforcement and local governance became more pronounced.
