A Massachusetts woman, Ryan Michael English, also known as Riley Jane English, has now reportedly been charged with attempting to assassinate a Cabinet nominee, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
The 24-year-old was apprehended in January after allegedly trying to enter the U.S. Capitol with a knife and two homemade Molotov cocktails, targeting Scott Bessent, who was then a nominee for Treasury Secretary.
On May 11, English faced serious charges, including attempted assassination and possession of a dangerous weapon on Capitol grounds, during her initial court appearance.
The allegations have raised alarms about political violence and threats against public officials, especially in the current charged political climate.
Authorities revealed that English had broader plans, aiming to target House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth as well.
She reportedly drew inspiration from the actions of Luigi Mangione, a suspect in the murder of a United HealthCare CEO, indicating a disturbing pattern of radicalization. This connection to a high-profile crime adds another layer of complexity to her motivations.
On January 26, English drove from her home state of Massachusetts towards Washington, D.C., with the intent to either kill Hegseth or Johnson, or to “burn down a conservative think tank” located near the White House.
The following day, she approached a Capitol Police officer and stated, “I’d like to turn myself in.” During this encounter, she admitted to carrying two Molotov cocktails and knives, expressing her intent to kill Bessent.
A search conducted by Capitol Police revealed a folding knife, two vodka bottles rigged as incendiary devices with cloths attached, and a lighter in English’s possession.
