Trump EPA Looks to Slash Staffing, Climate Programs

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reportedly announced a significant reorganization aimed at cutting costs by $300 million annually, which includes slashing various climate programs and reducing staffing to levels not seen since the Reagan administration.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated that the restructuring will allow the agency to focus more on its core mission of protecting human health and the environment.

Zeldin emphasized that the agency will prioritize statutory responsibilities, such as air quality and water safety, over initiatives related to environmental justice.

He asserted that these changes are necessary to improve efficiency and ensure that the EPA meets its obligations effectively.

The restructuring is expected to result in a workforce reduction of approximately 10%, with ongoing interest in the Deferred Resignation Program, which allows federal employees to leave voluntarily.

As of now, around 1,300 applications have been submitted for early resignations, indicating significant employee interest in the program.

The agency previously cut 280 positions when it disbanded the Biden administration’s diversity, equity, and inclusion office, reallocating some staff to other roles.

The reorganization will notably affect key offices within the EPA, including the Office of Air and Radiation and the Office of Water.

While focusing on traditional environmental issues, the agency plans to incorporate modern concerns, such as cybersecurity measures for water supply protection.

This move marks a clear shift in priorities for the EPA, aligning with the current administration’s goal of streamlining operations and reducing federal expenditure while emphasizing essential environmental protections.

With these changes, the agency aims to provide cleaner air, land, and water for American communities, reiterating its commitment to its foundational mission.
