During a recent press briefing, Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy reportedly questioned White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt about the status of President Donald Trump’s trade proposals.
Doocy pointed out that the Trump administration reportedly has 18 written trade proposals from foreign countries, yet details about these proposals remain undisclosed. He asked, “What is the hold up with that?”
Leavitt responded by assuring Doocy that there is “no hold up” in the negotiation process. She stated that the trade team is working tirelessly, mentioning recent conversations with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Leavitt emphasized the administration’s commitment to finalizing fair trade deals that benefit American workers, indicating that more information would be shared later in the week.
On April 9, Trump announced a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for all countries except China, allowing room for trade negotiations.
Leavitt confirmed that discussions for a potential trade deal with South Korea are advancing more quickly than anticipated.
Additionally, Trump indicated plans to “substantially” lower tariffs on China, although Chinese officials have contested their involvement in negotiations.
Leavitt clarified that there would be “no unilateral reduction in tariffs” on China, reinforcing that negotiations are necessary for any tariff adjustments.
The backdrop of these discussions includes the ongoing trade tensions that escalated following Trump’s initial tariff announcements, which prompted retaliatory measures from China.
Overall, the administration appears to be aiming to navigate the complex trade relationships while asserting that progress is being made in securing beneficial agreements for the U.S. economy.
