Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem reportedly had her purse stolen while dining at a restaurant in downtown Washington, D.C. on Sunday night.
According to law enforcement sources, the bag contained approximately $3,000 in cash, intended for family dinner expenses and Easter gifts.
In addition to the cash, the purse held Noem’s passport, makeup, blank checks, her driver’s license, keys, and medication.
The theft was captured on security footage, which shows an unidentified white male wearing a medical mask snatching the bag. Following the incident, the U.S. Secret Service began reviewing the footage and gathering further information.
Noem addressed the theft during the White House Easter Egg Roll, stating that the situation is “not resolved yet.”
She confirmed that the Secret Service is aware of the incident but noted that she hasn’t spoken directly with the agency about it.
This incident adds to the concerns regarding security for high-profile officials, especially in busy urban areas.
The Secret Service’s involvement highlights the seriousness of the theft, as the agency is responsible for protecting key government officials.
Noem’s spokesperson emphasized the unfortunate nature of the incident, particularly given the amount of cash involved and the sensitive personal items that were also taken.
As the investigation continues, authorities aim to identify the suspect and recover the stolen items.
The incident raises questions about safety and security measures for public figures in the nation’s capital, especially in light of recent concerns over crime rates in urban settings.
Noem’s experience serves as a reminder of the vulnerabilities that can affect even high-ranking officials while they are engaged in everyday activities in crime-ridden liberal cities like D.C.
