George Washington University professor Jonathan Turley reportedly criticized House Democrats following their vote to censure Representative Al Green for interrupting President Donald Trump’s address.
Turley stated that the party had reached a new low, remarking that the censure vote lowered Democrats from the status of federal legislators to that of “graffiti artists.”
“Green was censured, but only 9 Democrats joined in the motion. The Democrats then refused to clear the well and disrupted Speaker Johnson’s efforts to complete the censure process. The sound you heard was the Democratic party hitting rock bottom in this disgraceful display,” Turley said.
He noted that while Green was officially censured, only nine Democrats supported the motion, and many in the party continued to disrupt proceedings by singing “We Shall Overcome” as Speaker Mike Johnson attempted to finalize the censure process.
This behavior, according to Turley, exemplified a significant breakdown of decorum and civility within the party.
Turley emphasized the absurdity of the situation, pointing out that the disruption followed a censure meant to address Green’s earlier actions.
He praised Speaker Johnson for his restraint in handling the chaos, which included recessing the House amid the protests. He further argued that the Democrats’ actions illustrated a complete detachment from any principles of order.
In his comments, Turley highlighted the missed opportunity for Democrats to distance themselves from Green’s disruptive behavior, a sentiment that had been echoed by commentators across the political spectrum.
He described the moment as a defining choice for the party between maintaining civility or succumbing to chaos.
Concluding his remarks, Turley expressed concern over the implications of such behavior for the Democratic Party’s future, questioning how they could possibly recover from what he termed a “final surrender to pure rage.”
His analysis painted a grim picture of the current state of political discourse within the House.
