In response to President-elect Trump’s remarks regarding the acquisition of the island territory, Greenland Prime Minister Múte Egede reportedly declared his intention to secure independence from Denmark.
“The Greenlandic people’s opportunity for independence has been adopted through the provisions of the Self-Government Act, thereby creating a legal basis for how independence can be achieved,” Egede announced in a speech.
“A draft constitution for our country has also been prepared. Work has already begun with regard to creating the framework for Greenland as an independent state within the possibilities and provisions of the Self-Government Act.” he added.
The leader announced that a new development in Greenland is “imminent” in the days following Trump’s second attempt to purchase the land, which is located in the prominent Arctic region.
In response, Egede issued a statement proclaiming that Greenland was not for sale and that it would make every effort to prevent its acquisition by the United States.
His New Year’s Day address underscored the autonomous territory’s advancements, emphasizing the inauguration of an international airport as a global gateway to transformation.
“Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom,” he concluded.
He declared that the subsequent phase of a process to establish a “flexible” and “improved” infrastructure that could support trade and tourism was the construction of new airports in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq.
Egede concluded his address by extending his best regards for a prosperous new year.
