Fani Willis, Prosecutor Pursuing Trump in Georgia Wins Her Democratic Primary

The district attorney of Fulton County, who filed a series of historic indictments against former President Donald Trump last year, easily defeated a challenge from within her own Democratic party on Tuesday.

Christian Wise Smith was defeated by Fani Willis in the Georgia general primary, thereby establishing a race against Republican Courtney Kramer on November 5, 2024.

Willis was proclaimed the inaugural victor of the evening by the Associated Press, which declared the race over shortly after 7:30 p.m.

The district attorney’s victory celebration was attended by Nathan Wade, the former special prosecutor who has since been admitted to having a romantic relationship with Willis.

Willis and Wade’s relationship may necessitate the DA’s disqualification from further prosecuting the case.

Willis expressed her gratitude to her father, daughters, supporters, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, and Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, among others, during her victory speech.

The Atlanta-based district attorney indicted Trump and 18 others in August 2023 on charges of engaging in a criminal, racketeering-like attempt to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election.

In that election, Joe Biden became the first Democrat to win Georgia or any other significant Southern state since Bill Clinton in 1992.
