A Democrat in the House of Representatives voted “present” on Wednesday in support of a resolution that denounces rape and sexual violence perpetrated by Hamas during its conflict with Israel subsequent to the organization’s October terrorist attacks.
Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) was exceptional in that she was the only member to abstain from casting a vote, neither in favor nor against the measure, which had received widespread Republican and Democratic support.
The resolution was supported by 418 members, including 210 Republicans and 208 Democrats, according to the tally by the House clerk.
As the solitary Palestinian American member of Congress, Tlaib, a member of the leftist “Squad,” voted “present”; twelve other members did not cast ballots.
Certain individuals voiced disapproval of Tlaib’s “present” vote, which continued a trend in which the congresswoman opposed resolutions designed to demonstrate support for Israel.
This follows a censure she received last year for her response to Hamas’s fatal attacks.
