Son of Senator Kevin Cramer Charged in Death of Sheriff’s Deputy

Thursday marked the indictment of the son of Senator Kevin Cramer (R-ND) in relation to the collision that claimed the life of a North Dakota sheriff’s deputy.

Wednesday night, authorities received a report of a stolen SUV being operated by Ian Cramer, 42.

Upon being confronted by law enforcement, Cramer retreated in his vehicle.

Ian Cramer faced felony charges including negligent endangerment, manslaughter, and evading a police officer.

An additional allegation against him was operating a motor vehicle while his license was suspended, which is a misdemeanor.

Wednesday night, Ian Cramer was admitted to the hospital by his mother due to apprehensions regarding his mental well-being.

As soon as she exited the vehicle, Ian hurried into the driver’s seat and sped off.

After more than an hour, law enforcement officials located the vehicle, and the pursuit rapidly escalated to a high-speed confrontation in which Ian Cramer clocked speeds in excess of 100 mph.

Deputy Paul Martin retreated behind his patrol vehicle subsequent to assembling a device for deflating tires on the roadway.

After spotting the device, Ian Cramer swerved and collided with the patrol car, killing the deputy in the process.

The Senator responded to the news by releasing a statement which stated that his son “suffers from serious mental disorders which manifest in severe paranoia and hallucinations.”

“Kris was with Ian when he insisted on going to his brother Ike. Ike died in 2018. Kris took Ian to the Sanford Health emergency room in Bismarck. When she got out of our vehicle, Ian jumped into the driver’s seat and fled. Our daughter was able to track the car through Kris’ cell phone and lead officers to him in Mercer County, ND.” Cramer continued.
